I have had a pretty eventful couple of weeks!
I mentioned on Twitter about a Google recruiter getting a hold of me on LinkedIn:
Have a call with a Google recruiter today. Sometimes I feel like these big companies aren’t really reading my qualifications....
I was absolutely baffled: why did he contact me?, What is he trying to achieve? and Is this even real?.
I am three years into this and it feels like, while I have improved, my wheels are spinning with the sheer amount of JavaScript tools popping up everywhere and I am not able to keep up.
So it really surprised me that a Google recruiter of all recruiters, would be interested in me.
The Call
I set up with appointment with the recruiter in his Google Calendar. We spoke on 29 May 2018 and, well…
THAT GOOGLE RECRUITING CALL COULDN’T HAVE BEEN ANY MORE GREATER THAN IT WAS. Wow. I mean. Damn…
The recruiter asked about my background, my resume, and how much experience I had. We discussed getting better at JavaScript and algorithms so that when they interview me I’ll be prepared. He told me the most successful candidates read Cracking the Coding Interview and get prepared. He told me there was plenty of time and the jobs were there. He asked for a roundabout time that I could interview. I said the end of the year. He booked a call to me in December and sent over Google interview materials and CtCI ebook. As the kids say, I’m shook. It’s a weird feeling but not the first time a big company inquired. I got a call from Uber a couple months ago.
How Did This Even Happen?
I am not sure. I think it is a mix of being loud and being seen and sharing what I know. There’s also luck and incredible hard work. I just don’t feel Google ready. I’m probably not. I have until the end of the year to get ready.
In the Meantime
I’ve put my hat into the ring at other companies, some big some small. After the Google call I felt empowered to do so. I’ve put in 8 applications so far. My best shot until I hear back from one is a part time agency gig that’s very simple in scope but pays well. I may take it. I may not. It depends on what other companies have or if they are interested. I’m throwing pasta on the wall, essentially, to see what sticks.
